Roll On
Word & Music by Neil Carswell
Clear blue rain, a bottle of blues,
Sunday morning, wondering what to do.
Staring out a hotel window,
changing strings, a gettin’ in tune.
And I ain't easy to lean on,
I ain't easy to hold.
I’m as hard as the cold dark road I’m on.
So roll on, roll on,
to another county fair.
Burned-out skies and lullabies
are all that I have left,
so roll on, roll on!
Up onstage in California,
somebody should have warned me
it ain't all that fun.
A sold out show in Pasadena,
the crowd grows bigger
but my heart grows numb.
And I ain't easy to lean on,
and I ain't easy to hold.
I’m as hard as the cold dark road I’m on.
You know I got to roll on, roll on,
to another county fair.
Burned-out skies and lullabies
are all that I have left,
so roll on, roll on!
Every night I see fans swaying in the isles,
but the money, lord, it ain't worth the miles.
I got my woman waiting patiently back home,
she's hoping I’ll come back to hold her soon.
So I gotta roll on, roll on,
to another county fair.
Burned-out skies and lullabies
are all that I have left.
So roll on, roll on!
And I ain't easy to lean on,
and I ain't easy to hold.
I’m as hard as the cold dark road I’m on.
So I gotta roll on, roll on,
roll on, roll on,
roll on!
Song written in our old home in Ashland City, Tennessee after a conversation with Stu about being on the road touring, and how it’s not what it's cracked up to be. I’ve been there myself and could relate, so I wrote the song easy, the first of many that came out of that home after we first moved to Nashville. A change of surroundings has always been good for writing; it seems I’ve always been on the move to somewhere better, so I think.
