Time to Think
Words & Music by Neil Carswell
I’ve finally thrown away
the best years of my life,
laying in bed all strung out,
searching for my soul in a padded cell,
waging war on myself,
I just can't find myself.
And the things I recall most of all,
was a band I played music in,
how I ran off all my friends and lovers.
So give me a little time to think,
you know I think I gotta quit drinking.
Sunlight and blue eyes,
snow falling on the grass.
Seems most my days get shattered by
bourbon drink and tall tales.
Last Sunday night I discovered that
I’s still waging war on myself,
I just can't find myself.
And a reply came to mind from off the wall,
about a band I played music in,
and how I ran off all my friends and lovers.
So give me a little time to think,
you know I think I’m gonna quit drinking.
Sunlight and blue eyes,
snow falling in the grass.
And the things I recall most of all,
was a band I played music in,
how I ran off all my friends and lovers.
So give me a little time to think,
you know I think I’m gonna quit drinking.
Sunlight and blue eyes,
snow falling on the grass.
Give my a little time to think,
you know I think I gotta quit drinking.
Sunlight and blue eyes,
snow falling in the grass.
Song written out west, skiing from Salt Lake City, Utah to Jackson Hole, Wyoming to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I had the song written in a week or so, in the car while traveling. It was just the way I felt at the time and I did quit drinking for a few weeks while writing it. A song dear to me and one that is probably the most personal story of my life on the record. After writing it I played it to a publisher with only an acoustic guitar. One day in Nashville a few months later, he replied, "That's a mad man’s song,” in a way I guess it is, definitely not sugar-coated at all.
