Nothing Left to Lose
Words & Music by Neil Carswell
Diamond rings and fancy things
use to mean everything to you.
Now you won’t even raise your head up off the bed
to smell the scent of a sweet perfume.
You won’t even strain your eyes
to take a look down on Park Ave.
You better give it up, baby
‘cause you got nothing left to lose.
Your evening gown it looked so nice
all the pretty lights were shining right on you.
But you didn’t even give a glance
you had the chance when I moved across the room.
You didn’t even share a smile,
I know sometimes it’s hard for you to choose just what to do.
You better give it up, baby
‘cause you got nothing left to lose.
The spell that you’re under
has violently plundered you
into a world of confusion.
You’re laughing out loud
while you wearing a frown
way down deep inside of you.
You’re gasping for breath
woman you need some help,
from all you’ve put yourself through,
just give it up, baby, ‘cause you got nothing left to lose.
All the walls are closing in
You’re living in your sin, you know it’s true.
You can’t even tantalize the weak one’s now like you use to do.
I know just where you came from,
I was there before you caught the blues.
Just give it up, baby, ‘cause you got nothing left to lose.
The spell that you’re under
has violently plundered you
into a world of confusion.
You’re laughing out loud
while you’re wearing a frown
way down deep inside of you.
You’re gasping for breath,
woman you need some help
from all you’ve put yourself through.
Wo, oh, give it up, baby,
‘cause you got nothing left to lose.
Oh, give it up baby, ‘cause you got nothing left to lose.
Song written in our old house in Ashland City Tennessee, during the “Burn It Down” sessions prior to the recording date. I wrote it in the late morning after watching a movie made in Spain, giving the inspiration for the melody. The lyric is what it is and came very fast. Sometimes it would seem to be better where you came from than where you’ve arrived in life. Roy Orbison, a huge influence to me and in this tune, a vain attempt somewhat of his style.
