She
Words & Music by Graham Parsons and Chris Etheridge

She, she came from the land of the cotton,
a land that was nearly forgotten by everyone.
And she, she worked and she slaved so hard.
A big old field was her back yard in the delta sun.

Oh, but she sure could sing,
My, my, my, she sure could sing.

He, looked down and he took a little pity,
the whole town swore that he lost it for a little while.
But, he didn't mind if she wasn't very pretty,
‘cause in his heart he knew she was the only one.

Oh, she sure could sing.
My, my, my, the woman could sing,
sing like an angel!

She had faith, she had believing.
She led all the people together in singing.
And she prays every night to the Lord up above,
singing hallelujah, hallelujah.

They, use to walk singing songs by the river,
even though he knew one day she’d have to go away.
And she, never gave a thought to what the good Lord had to give her
No, she never had to worry about it for a single day.
‘cause I’m telling you....

Lord, Lord, Lord, the woman could sing like an angel.
Sing like an angel!
My, my, my, she sure could sing!
Lord, Lord, Lord, the woman could sing like an angel.
My, my, my, she sure could sing!

She, she came from the land of the cotton,
a land that was nearly forgotten by everyone.

A song I first heard while working as a carpenter on a job Phil Green had got me building a studio in Providence, Rhode Island. I met a man named Gary Job there, and he also was from the mountains of North Carolina; very soft spoken and kind. He asked me, “Do you like Graham Parsons?" I had never heard of him, but soon found out that the music was really great. I slept in the old basement of the “studio to be” at night and I remember the rats scurrying around me in the dark. With an old piece of sheet rock, I wrote down these great lyrics which, homesick at the time, seemed to bring me to tears. I added them to the back of my memory somehow and back at Phil's studio, Normandy Sound, I worked out this rendition on his grand piano. A more soulful approach, promising myself to never forget how the song touched me, and to one day record it as an obscure cover. I feel, in a sense, I made it mine, almost as if I were a co-writer in a different place in time.
