Till the Blues Come In
Words & Music by Neil Carswell

She was born a blue-eyed baby
in the Blue Ridge mountain rain,
down a little lonesome valley,
by the old burned out coal train.

And the engineer never heard her cry,
when he drove that old diesel engine by.
Ah, the preacher man gives his sermon in an army tent.
Some sinners they came but mostly they just went.
Down to the little local bar, where I'd sit and play my old guitar.
Till the blues come in. Ah ha...
Till the blues come in. Ah ha...

She stares into the mirror
and paints some makeup on her face
and combs her tattered hair and heads down to the streets.
From dust till dawn, she lays out all night long.
While her little girl lays a dreamin’,
wishing momma was at home.

The preacher man gives his sermon in an army tent.
And some sinners they came but mostly they just went.
Down to the little local bar, where I'd sit and play my old guitar.
No, the engineer never heard her cry,
when he drove that old diesel engine by and by.
And the blues come in. Ah ha...
And the blues come in. Ah ha...
And the blues come in. Ah ha...
And the blues come in...

Song written in Glen Alpine, North Carolina, at our old house there. A song I wrote after a story my wife's mother told me of her childhood growing up; this was the inspiration for the song. I remember writing it in an open D tuning and thinking this is one of the best songs I have ever
written. Later in Salem, Massachusetts, I finished the lyric in a small hotel with Judd Fuller and my wife as sounding boards for it. I remember it was really snowing and we had just come back from the old Hawthorne Hotel Bar in midtown Salem. A great memory of writing while doing pre-production at Barry Goudreau's home overlooking the bay, preparing for the next day’s cutting session at Long View Farms.
