When I first got this release, which was classified as Southern Rock music, I expected some really hard driving rowdy bar type music.
What I found though was Southern Rock music with a spiritual side. The songs are set mostly against a backdrop of melodic melodies along with elements of Blues.
Don't get me wrong you'll hear some rocking tracks on this release like the opening one, "The Cain Preacher" with it heavy drumming and rocking guitars.
Each song plays like a little snippet of Neil's life and thoughts at that particular time. They deal a lot with reflecting on the past and using that to reshape your future for the better.
Neil's vocals fit well with the lyrics with their tone of I've lived this part now let me tell you about it.
Besides Neil's vocals, along with drum and guitars, you'll also nice piano and organ parts that are peppered throughout many of the songs.
My favorite tracks are; "Edge Of The Green" and the final track, "Never Been Born."
"Edge Of The Green" is a song that has a Hank Williams Jr. story telling sound to it.
"Never Been Born" is the most poignant song with its lyrics that deal with aging parents and the need to really take the time to spend with them and truly appreciate them while their still alive.
Although some of the music found on this release might not be what first comes to mind when thinking of traditional Southern Rock, the music that is found on it is well worth your time.
