Song written in a hotel room in Nashville Tennessee while in town doing ovd. vocals on Ruby Jane and Glasses of Wine. I came back to the room and saw two guitar picks on the floor I couldn’t figure out where they came from. My guitar was in an open D tuning so I picked it up and wrote it in a few minutes it seems. I was in tears thinking back to my childhood and the times I spent on the river with my Uncle Harry Lee White. He wasn’t a real preacher but he did a lot of preaching to me anyway. A true story of my life — a heavy metal approach with a back porch vibe. Cane means River Cane, or you can take it as Cain and Able.

Song came to me in an apartment over the studio where I was staying at the time in Warren, Rhode Island; above Normandy Studios owned by Phil Green. The lyric was inspired by a verse out of the Bible, Proverbs Ch. 7 Verse 19. The lyric came to me one day while I was having my car worked on. I saw a Bible open so I looked on the page and there it was pushing its way off the page. Already written by King Solomon many, many years ago. The first rock star he sort of was, later to conclude it all isn’t worth the price. “With all these things bring much misery.” Solomon wrote. This was a verse I lived way too many years, lucky to be alive.

Song was written at the cabin in North Carolina after the death of a man I admired a lot, Robert Williams. I went on a bad trip on shrooms and God knows what else before I wrote it. I was lucky to make it out alive with a mind intact. I was at a New Age, want-to-be, granola hippie festival in the mountains of North Carolina. I hid in a root cellar until I came down off that crap. My friend Mark Lambert came to pick me up the next day and I vowed to go sober and I did for a while. The song came from that sober period of time in my life. A good friend of mine, Chip Ross, once told me “this ain’t a song it’s a letter.” I guess he was right. Too late to say you’re sorry.

Song written at the cabin in North Carolina in a down time in my life, about love lost and one’s mind. “I got lost in the arrangements, woman, somewhere I tossed my goods.” That about says it. All them glasses of wine. Still, I wouldn’t have traded the inspiration for the world.

Song written in Rhode Island and Boston, Massachusetts after the break up of Copperhead. Stu Kimball had the music in an open G tuning, started playing it to me and the lyric just came. “Stoned by the weight of the righteous side of angels.” The old man tellin’ in the lyric was Tom Dowd . Sherry Lee is my cousin who I grew up with and am very close to. A song about friendship gone bad, betrayal and spiritual heaviness at the time. A song to my old band Copperhead, “what a powerhouse we were in the short time we shared together.”

He was like a father figure to a lot of people, always good to me and my family; him and his wife Marie. This is just a true story about a man I’m sure many people can relate to.

Song written at my home in Ashland City, the music and lyric hook, Poor Side Of The Tracks came first. Later I wrote the bulk of the lyric with Jen Harris at Steven Sharp’s home of Sharp Objects song plugging company. Set up with Jen by Steve for a co-write. We came up with some good lyrics that day and then Doug Jones helped me finish a few lyrics over the phone because Jen was sick at the time. I pulled the thought from Johnny Rivers' "Poor Side of Town". I heard it on the radio while driving home and reflected back to my own life. It seems you reflect back and think you had it so bad at the time, but things were so simple and pure then on the poor side of it all. Tracks or towns, cities, country roads or streets, success isn't always what you think it is when you're in the thick of it all - you can never go back, only in your mind.

Song written at Cal 4 Pub with Dylan Altman. I carried the lyric hook and 6-8 time melody with me for several years. Dylan got right on it playing the Wurlitzer and helping with the lyric, chord structure and arrangement of the tune. We made a work tape and Johnny Neel listened to it twice and cut it, amazing memory. I guess that comes with being blind — one of the only true musical geniuses I have ever met.

Song started in LA at Peer Mansion Pub., above the Sunset Strip, later finished at the cabin in North Carolina. This song is about love lost, a reflection of times spent, gone for good. "So called friends and bright-eyed lovers; let me tell you brother, I have surely paid the cost." A true story of when and now, how empty one feels when it all comes crashing down. A mansion of heartache in the end it all becomes. Yet, I’d do it all again, “Slow down, and take a deep breath,” as Peter Wolf once said to me.

Song started at the cabin in North Carolina before the big flood came and wiped us out of there. So we ended up in Tennessee where I finished writing the song last winter at Chris & Nanette Anderson’s home. I had been here about six months or so and missed my mom and dad a lot. I wrote the song for them and for all parents and kids alike. It is so hard to see your loved ones growing old, so much sometimes it’s hard to bear. I hope the song makes someone think, maybe pick up the phone and give a loved one a call. This song is dear to my heart, a rare one I think, these kind of songs only come a few times in one’s career — a true inspiration from God. “I love you Mom and Dad and miss you dearly.” The price one pays the piper to carry a tune in a bucket filled with empty dreams.
